Overage Application Policy

At SGM, we aim to maintain the highest level of competitive integrity across all our leagues and tournaments.

As a general rule, overage players are not permitted to compete in younger age brackets. However, we recognise that certain circumstances warrant an exception. Below are the specific categories eligible for an overage application.

Application Deadline
All applications must be submitted by
Sunday 1 November 2026
Applications received after this date will not be considered. Players must not take the pitch until written approval has been received from SGM.
Policy Exceptions
Relative Age Effect (R.A.E) — U8 to U10 only: Teams may register one (1) player who falls under R.A.E. criteria. This applies to players born between 1 October and 31 December of the year immediately preceding the age group cutoff.
Female Player Allowance: Female players are permitted to participate in mixed-gender age groups one year below their actual birth year. For example, a U13-eligible female player may compete in the U12 mixed division.
Existing FV Dispensation: Any player who holds a current and valid Football Victoria (FV) Dispensation will be considered for approval, provided official documentation is supplied.
How to Apply

To ensure your request is reviewed before the start of the competition, please follow this two-step process:

  1. Online Registration: Register the player via your online team portal and clearly state the reason for the dispensation request in the notes or comments section.
  2. Supporting Documentation: Send an email to info@sportsgroup.melbourne containing one of the following:

A copy of the official FV Dispensation Letter.
A formal letter from the Club Technical Director or President detailing the specific reasons and justification for the request.
! Please note: All applications are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Submission of an application does not guarantee approval. Players should not take the pitch until formal written confirmation has been received from SGM.
Consequences of Non-Compliance

Teams found to be fielding ineligible overage players without an approved dispensation will face the following consequences:

A 0–3 loss will be recorded for any match in which an ineligible overage player participated.
The ineligible player will be immediately disqualified from the tournament.
Repeated offending teams may be expelled from the tournament and have their club's future participation in affiliated SGM events affected, at the discretion of Tournament Management.
! Teams providing incorrect or falsified documentation to circumvent this policy will face the same consequences and may be reported to Football Victoria.
